Cloisonné Earrings or Pendant - 2-part Class. Friday August 7, 5-7:00, AND Saturday August 8th 11:00-3:00 (Advanced Class)
Some experience is helpful, but not necessary.
Cloisonné is a traditional enameling technique in which thin, fine silver wires or bands are fixed edgewise onto a metal surface to create a design. These delicate silver bands form small compartments, or cells (called cloisons), that act as miniature walls, keeping different enamel colors separate during firing. Finely ground glass enamel is carefully placed into each cell, allowing the artist to build intricate patterns, images, and color relationships without the colors blending together.
Once the cells are filled, the piece is fired in a kiln, where the enamel melts and fuses to the metal. Multiple firings are often required to build up the enamel to the height of the silver wires. The surface is then ground and polished smooth, revealing the brilliant colors framed by the fine silver lines. The result is a richly detailed work characterized by vibrant color, luminous depth, and the distinctive network of silver outlines that define the cloisonné technique.
Friday, we will saw out our designs, and begin attaching the silver wires. Saturday, we will fill the cells with enamel colors and fire them.
